In Defense of the Crusades Part Two

Were there Crusade against heretics in Europe?

Yes. Many of the crusades in Europe were to hold back the attacking Moors, but some were wrong, and as time went on, the military orders became more power hungry.

What about Separation of church and state?

The crusades were called by Pope Urban II in 1095, but he did not really run the crusades. Crusaders came from their own countries, and weren't bound to the pope, but rather inspired by his call.

Were The Knights Templar even Christians?

There are many theories on the Knights Templar. Some people think they were a sect of Muslims, others that they worshipped a goddess. Such theories of these are myths, but the truth is not much is known about them. Different accounts of the time even differ on their origins. No one truly knows when they began, or how many knights were part of it at it's beginning. What's left then on this is mystery to us. Helen Nicholson is a good source for information on the Knights Templar.

Should we as Christians wage war against pagans?

No. We do not wage wars against people because of their religions. Scripture does allow war, but a Christian's view of war should be to bring peace, and self defense of  brothers and sisters in Christ. Luke 22: 36-38, Romans 13:4, and the books of  Joshua, are all good scripture supports for this. Also St. Augustine outlined the reasons for a just war, which maybe very helpful.

Should Christians proclaim holy war as the crusaders did?

The truth is we live in a world when holy war is always going on. The Saracens first proclaimed holy war on the Christians. The Crusaders were only returning holy war.

  2. Also, History of the World Mega Conference by Vision Forum has a helpful speech by dr. George Grant on the Crusades, of which he defends the first three.
