The Great Augustine

''God loves each of us as if there was only one of us.'' -St. Augustine

Probably no saint has had more impact in all Christendom than the great St. Augustine. The author of hundreds of works including Confessions and City of God, formulated the teaching of original sin against the heresy of Pelagianism, has had heavy impact on his teachings on free will and predestination, and formulated the reasons that a just war could take place.
But it goes beyond this, Augustine influenced the medieval world more than any other theologian. The Crusades could probably not have happened without Augustine, nor John calvin gather his famous teachings on predestination without Augustine, whom influenced both him and Martin Luther.

Great art Thou, O Lord, and greatly to be praised; great is Thy power, and Thy wisdom infinite. And Thee would man praise; man, but a particle of Thy creation; man, that bears about him his mortality, the witness of his sin, the witness that Thou resistest the proud: yet would man praise Thee; he, but a particle of Thy creation. Thou awakest us to delight in Thy praise; for Thou madest us for Thyself, and our heart is restless, until it repose in Thee.
Saint Augustine Confessions,

Augustine grew up in a half Christian home{ his mother was Christian, though not his father.} But in his youth he was immoral and turned away from the faith.  He served the Roman Empire against the church, but a great Christian, bishop Ambrose of Milan, led Augustine to faith in Christ Jesus. Augustine became a baptized member of the church, a monk, and later even a bishop, even though he never felt he deserved to be. His On the Trinity, made up of fifteen books, is his most profound work, which he spent time on for fifteen years.  was inspired by On The Incarnation by St. Athanasius and Augustine is more famous in the western church of today, than any other early church father.  A truly beloved saint that ashamed of his youthful sin, lived a remarkable life for the Lord that inspired not only his day but 1600 years later.

''You have made us for yourself oh Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.''
 -St. Augustine
